CTRL BIO & HISTORY |
Pre-CTRL: Before the Aether (1992-1997)
All stories start somewhere. In the late Fall of 1992 the first incarnation of what would be CTRL was formed around the nucleus of Brad MacAllister (synths) and Joel Willard (vocals). From 1992 until early 1997 these two performed under various names, with changing line-ups and smattering of shows focused in the general area of central Pennsylvania (an area not know for cultural experimentalism). Some of the names that hung on the band during this time were Payphone (gothic punk band), Doomsday Conspiracy (Electro Metal), Crane (experimental noise), Evilsphere (guitar driven industrial dance), and last of all Fact87 (Gothic Industrial).Ctrl: The Early Years (1998-1999)
After the financial and mental strain of losing an entire album, Fact87 split up and reformed as CTRL in March 1998. The decision was made to record and produce the album with materials that were on hand/borrowed/begged for/stolen to insure that all would not be in vain. The band, with the help of engineer Joe Hughes, started working to reproduce some of the tracks that were lost during the 9nthwave studios sessions. The band made the decision to move into a 19th century abandoned building during the recording of this project, a decision that would haunt them for years to come. Faulty power, leaking roof, and no heat hounded the band during the entire Winter of 1998. All the gear had to be covered in plastic sheeting to insure it would not be ruined. 3 months into the recording project, a clerical error saw the erasure of 50% of the completed tracks for what would become the first full length release ("Secure the Shadow"). During this time period bass player - Bill Early, guitarist - Jason Fenimore, and drummer - Joe Celenzo joined the ranks of CTRL.
After 5 months of recording the band got some much need technical assistance from Michael Bann (Advent Sleep) to complete the final tracks for the first album. The band was reaching near mental collapse over the Summer of 1998. With the completed masters shipped off to Time Warner for CD Pressing, and the launch of the new label (Analog Aether), CTRL finally had arrived.
"Secure the Shadow" (ERM - 120592) was released on October 1, 1998, after 8 straight months of recording and mastering. The band was never really happy with the sound of the final product, but vowed to become better from the experience. In January 1999, the band received a letter from Cleopatra Records that their track "LIOC" had been chosen for "the Unquiet Grave Volume 1." Reviews, interviews, and playlists soon started rolling in after that. It was very overwhelming for the band to do interviews about how exciting it was to be a musician, when they were broke and all but homeless. In April 1999, after several disputes, Bill Early left CTRL to pursue his own art. Drummer Joe Celenzo soon departed as well. To make matters worse, Jason Fenimore relocated to Austin, Texas, thus splitting up the active members. In July 1999, CTRL toured the Southwestern United States and met Jason in Austin.
In the Fall of 1999, the band decided to relocate to Austin, Texas. The band also released "Version 10," a limited edition release of remixes that went out mostly to DJ’s in the United States and Canada.
2000-2002: Is Burning, the Low Technicians
Relocation to Texas was a blessing and a curse for CTRL. The band had moved from a staunchly right wing factory town from the North, to a Southwestern liberal city with a seemingly endless strip of bars and clubs. Needless to say, distractions took their toll on the band, and finally in March 2001, "Is Burning..." was released in the United States on CD. With a more mature sound, and stronger songwriting, the band moved more towards Electro/EBM, rather than their dark roots of Gothic Industrial. During this time period the addition of Frederic Smith (beats, turntables) gave the band a bigger punch live. After a long string of shows in 2001-2002, Joel Willard retired from the band in 2002. Joel went on to create the electronic hybrid pop project, IRDBISA.
Also during this period, Brad started the band The Low Technicians, and released 2 albums on the Diffusion Records label (after much support from Andrew Sega/Iris), "The Forward Rewinding EP," and "Remembrance," with guitarist, Brian Pearson. During the final days of recording "Remembrance," Jason and Brad got together with Frederic and did 3 highly experimental shows under the name CTRL (for lack of a better term at the time). At the end of these shows, Frederic departed CTRL to pursue his own project, KUSSER. Faced with a reduced line-up, and very little label support, Jason and Brad performed what they thought would be the last CTRL show in Dallas, in December 2002, opening for the band, Provision. The show proved to be a spark for CTRL.
2003-2005: Losing the image
In January 2003, the decision was made that CTRL would leave Analog Aether, and record an album for Diffusion Records (a decision based on fact that Analog Aether became simply a portal on the web). Jason and Brad reworked the band from the ground up to focus on what they titled "Electro Death Pop." Heavily influenced by OMD, Dead Can Dance, and EBM, such as Nitzer Ebb, the band recorded the tracks for what would become "Lose the Image" over the Summer/Fall of 2003. All the while Brad and Jason were performing shows with the Low Technicians. In November 2003, Alex Virlios (formerly of Provision) joined CTRL on synths and backing vocals. In January 2004, a three song EP titled, "Lose the Image -Promo" was released to DJ’s and a few reviewers, but the material varies slightly from the album versions. The addition of Alex prompted the band to delay the release of the new album, "Lose the Image," so that Alex could be incorporated into the recording process. After the backing vocals and synths were retouched with Alex’s unique mark, "Lose the Image" was released on Diffusion Records in April 2004.
2005-Present: Loaded Weapons and Darkened days
The fourth full-length CTRL cd "loaded weapons and darkened days" was released in March of 2006. The band is currently perfroming live in support of the album and always looking toward the future to record more Electro-Death-Pop.
